“What is this?” he asked, voice tightening.
“Non-solicitation reminders,” Greg said lightly. “And an acknowledgment of return of company property and confidential materials.”
Kyle’s hand trembled as he flipped through pages. “You can’t stop me from working.”
“We’re not stopping you from working,” Greg said. “We’re stopping you from stealing.”
Kyle looked around the room like he expected support. Like he expected the crew to rise up for him.
Nobody moved.
Because when you work construction, you know who shows up. You know who bleeds. You know who gets the call when the concrete truck is late and the temperature’s dropping.

Melissa’s rental SUV rolled to a stop like a question.

“Jake,” she said, walking toward me.
I kept working.
“What do you want?” I asked.
She stopped a few feet away, eyes sharp, scanning.
“This place is worth more than you admitted in court,” she said.

Clean. Soft. No calluses. No dirt under the nails.
“You came out here to appraise my grandfather’s land,” I said.
She lifted her chin. “It’s marital property.”
“No,” I said. “It’s family property.”
She scoffed. “Same thing.”
“It’s not,” I said, and my voice was steady in a way that surprised even me. “Family property is what you protect. Marital property is what you split. You made your choice.”
Her eyes flashed. “You’re acting like I’m the villain.”
“You’re acting like you didn’t understand the contract you signed,” I said.
She stepped closer. “You owe me, Jake.”
I stopped hammering. Stood. Wiped my hands on my jeans. Looked her straight in the eyes.
“I don’t owe you my life,” I said. “I already gave you twenty-two years of it.”
She opened her mouth to fire back, but then she noticed the new fence posts. The repairs. The work.
“You’re doing this yourself?” she asked, like she couldn’t believe it.
I almost laughed.
“This is what I do,” I said.
She stared at me for a moment, and I saw it—confusion, frustration, something like fear.
Because she’d built her whole plan on the assumption that I was just a wallet with hands.
That my value was cash.
But out here, cash doesn’t fix a fence. Cash doesn’t mend a gate. Cash doesn’t keep cattle in or coyotes out.

I watched her walk back to the SUV.

She slammed the door and drove away.

That night, sitting on the porch, I thought about the whole mess and what it had taught me.
