My father found his voice, but it came out thin. “She’s dying. She can’t do this.”

My mother stepped forward, chin lifted. “This is humiliating.”
“No,” Graham replied, still polite, “this is accurate.”

“No,” I said. “You made it easy. For years. You made it easy to treat me like I don’t count, because I kept showing up anyway.”
My mother’s eyes flashed. “You’re jealous.”
I almost laughed. Not because it was funny—because it was predictable. When people run out of excuses, they reach for the one that makes you look small.
“I’m not jealous,” I said. “I’m awake.”
Haley’s breath hitched. “So what now?” she whispered, voice suddenly small. “Are you… taking my car?”

A murmur rippled through the guests. Someone near the hallway whispered, “She planned this.” Another voice answered, “Good for her.”
My mother’s face went white.
She wasn’t hearing the whispers as gossip. She was hearing them as social death.
And that was the truth: to my mother, humiliation hurt more than betrayal. The piano was a thing. Reputation was oxygen.
My father turned toward me again, rage sharpened by panic. “You’re going to destroy this family.”
I held his gaze, steady.
“You sold Grandma’s Steinway,” I said. “You destroyed it the moment you decided her wishes didn’t matter.”
He flinched. Just a fraction. Like the truth finally found a crack.
