If they were monsters all the time, the body would leave sooner.

But a few moments of care do not cancel a system of extraction.
That was the lesson my adult life kept pressing into me until I finally stopped arguing with it.

The holidays were worst.

At Thanksgiving, my mother set out the good serving dishes. Everyone pivoted.

I looked at him.

A year after I moved, I got promoted.

Senior systems role. Better salary. Better title. “I did,” I said. “Eventually.”

He flinched.

Because that was the whole point. People always say just say no as if refusal exists in a vacuum. As if years of expectation, guilt, social coding, and childhood training vanish the minute a person acquires adult lungs. But no is not a magic trick. It is a muscle. And if a family has spent years rewarding you for not using it, the first flex feels like tearing something.

Priya came back out before he could answer. We loaded the food into the car. The twins stirred but didn’t wake. Kunal nodded once, stiffly, and drove away.

We have never discussed it again.

But something changed after that.

Not repair.
Recognition.

And recognition, even silent and incomplete, can sometimes be enough to stop the worst repetitions.

These days, my relationship with my family is made of controlled doses.

The twins are older now. Loud, funny, merciless in the way children are when they finally become articulate enough to expose the adults around them. One of them asked me last year why I live “in the tiny apartment with the cool snacks,” and before anyone could intervene, the other answered, “Because Chachu likes peace.”

It was the funniest and most correct thing anyone had said about me in years.

I still think about the Tuesday kitchen sometimes.

The rain.
The microwave dinner in the fridge.
Priya’s phone in her hand.
My mother chopping cilantro like morality was a garnish.
Kunal already imagining his day off.
My father rustling newspaper and disapproval.

And me, standing there with wet socks and a whole life still hidden from me, saying I’m not available in a voice so quiet it could have passed for politeness if you didn’t understand it was actually the first clean act of self-respect in a very long time.

Instead I gave them something harder to survive.

Calm is difficult to discredit.

So no, I did not storm out in rage.

I stopped paying.

Stopped being the wallpaper that made the room look finished.

That is what they still cannot forgive, I think.
