The anniversary of the wedding incident came and went without me noticing at first. It wasn’t until a junior associate mentioned it in passing—she had heard the story during onboarding—that I paused.

“Does it ever bother you?” she asked carefully. “Being remembered for that moment?”

I considered the question.

“No,” I said. “Because it wasn’t the most important thing I’ve done. It was just the most visible.”

She nodded, absorbing that.

Visibility distorts scale. It convinces people that the loudest moments define us. They don’t. What defines us are the quiet choices we repeat when no one is watching.
