“Why me?” I asked, voice low.

I let out a short breath—almost a laugh, but not quite.
Garrett leaned forward. “Hunter, I need to know something. If you take this job… are you going to burn the place down?”
I looked at him, and for a second I saw not a CEO, but a man trying to understand whether the person he failed would become his punishment.
“I’m going to rebuild it,” I said. “But it won’t be comfortable.”
Garrett nodded. “Good.”
When I told Sarah that night, she sat down at the kitchen table like her legs had stopped working.
“CFO?” she whispered.
I nodded. “If the board approves.”
Her eyes filled. She covered her mouth with her hand like she was holding back a sound too big for the room.
“You did it,” she said. “You didn’t let them erase you.”
I walked around the table and knelt beside her chair, taking her hand.
“I almost let them,” I admitted.
