He was quiet for a moment.

“It was.”
Then, because marriage should allow this too, he kissed my temple and said, “I’m glad you retired from it.”

That is the ending, if you need one. Not that evil was punished and truth triumphed and everyone found exactly the emotional language they deserved. Life is less symmetrical than that. My sister did not become a cautionary tale so much as a distant weather system. My parents became slightly more honest and much older very quickly. I married a man who told me the truth before it was useful to him and stood beside me while I waited for the lie to make itself loud enough for others to hear.
And me?
I learned something I should have learned much earlier.
Trust is not proven by never being tested. It is proven by surviving the exact moment designed to destroy it.
