I thought about all the years. Saraphene’s little jokes. My father’s assumptions. Every holiday where I became the helper while someone else got praised for potential they hadn’t converted into anything real. Every time my mother had seen it and decided softness was safer than interference.

“Yes,” I said. “You should have.”

The words hung there.

No one died from them.

That mattered.

We talked for over an hour after that. Not perfectly. Not cleanly. But honestly enough to hurt. She told me things I had never known—that my father had always felt intimidated by technical work he didn’t understand and overvalued polished language because it made him feel less left behind. That Saraphene had been jealous of me long before I ever understood she had a reason. I archived the email and closed my laptop.

The press called it disciplined growth. Investors called it founder strength. My team called it finally being allowed to work without drama.

I called it oxygen.

On the anniversary of the hotel dinner, I stayed late at the office by choice.

Everyone else had gone.

The city outside was dark. The conference room glass reflected me back in fragments. I walked through the building slowly—past engineering, product, sales, support. Past the little signals of ordinary work that actually make a company real: sticky notes, whiteboards, forgotten coffee mugs, test devices charging on a cart.

When I reached the lobby, I stopped in front of the framed photo we had hung near reception a month earlier.

The original repair shop.

The strip mall. The hand-painted sign. My father younger. Me beside him, maybe nineteen, holding an open computer case and looking irritated at the camera for interrupting my work.

I stared at it for a long time.

Not with nostalgia.

When I got home that night, I found a package leaning against my apartment door.

Inside was an old screwdriver set in a worn red case.
