We did not hug with music swelling in the background. She did not earn her way back with one confession.
But before she left, she asked if she could come to a cooking class sometime.
“Not as my mother,” I said. “As a student.”
She nodded.
“I can do that.”
She came three weeks later.
She burned the first batch of biscuits.
I did not help her.
Grandma would have approved.
By winter, Grant accepted a plea agreement.
The details were less dramatic than people wanted them to be and more serious than he wanted them to be. Financial penalties. Probation terms. Required counseling. The restaurant hosted Christmas Eve supper that year.

I nodded.
I was not ready to say more.
But I passed her the cornbread.
