Caleb played a fingerpicked version of the song Vera and Nathan had danced to on their first date. No orchestra. No drama. Just strings, sunlight, and a man waiting at the end of the aisle with red-rimmed eyes and steady hands.

Nathan looked at her like she was not fragile, not difficult, not damaged, not too much.

Only chosen.

As Tom placed her hand in Nathan’s, he shook Nathan’s hand and muttered, “Take care of her or answer to me.”

Nathan nodded solemnly. “Yes, sir.”

Within days, the currency Diane had spent years building—devoted widow, sacrificing mother, civic woman holding it all together—began to collapse. The women’s auxiliary suggested she take a leave while things settled. Neighbors grew cooler. Calls slowed. Sympathy thinned into scrutiny.

Uncle Tom, who checked on her despite everything, reported the conversations that followed.

“They turned my daughter against me,” Diane cried to him.

“Nobody turned her,” Tom said. “You pushed her.”

“She’s my child. I have a right.”

“You have a right to love her,” he told her. “You do not have a right to own her.”

For once, it seemed, nobody in town was willing to mistake control for devotion.
