I saw her through the front window before she opened the door. She stood on the sidewalk for several seconds, looking at the gold painted lettering, at the couples inside, at the long bar where Clara was pulling espresso. She looked smaller in the reflection, as if the city itself had trimmed her down.

When she came in, the room did not stop. No one recognized her. To everyone else she was just another well dressed woman in her sixties entering a busy East Nashville cafe. That anonymity seemed to unsettle her.

“Yes.”

I said nothing.

Honesty can be uglier than lying when it is finally stripped clean.

I let the silence hold until she had to feel the weight of her own words.

Then I asked, “Why are you here.”

She looked up, eyes shinier now.

“Because I have spent two years building every sentence I might say to make myself sound less terrible, and none of them were true. And because the worst part is not the fines or the debt or the humiliation. It is knowing you were exactly who I thought you were. Better than me. Smarter than me. I breathed in slowly.

For a moment we just looked at each other, two women built in the same house and broken by different uses of it.

“Nothing. I think that might be the first right answer of my adult life.”

I surprised myself then by asking, “Do you want coffee.”

She laughed once, shakily.

“Yes.”

I made her one.
