For a second, she almost smiled.
Then she said, very quietly, “It may be a terrible idea.”
I sat back.
“Then you know where you are.”
That hurt her. I could see it. But not, I thought, because it was cruel. Because it was exact.
Jennifer had always preferred conflict when she could still pretend the map was unclear. What she struggled with was clarity.
“I’m not staying because of the house,” she said.
“I didn’t say you were.”

No solemn inventories of old hurts. Instead we dealt in smaller things. Recipes. Weather. Work. A movie she’d hated.
