Courtney stood so quickly her chair tipped backward.
“Daddy?”
Richard looked at me.
His face had gone gray.
“You did this,” he said.
“Your clients did this,” I said quietly. “The ones whose retirement funds are missing.”
Whitfield stepped forward.
“Mr. Ashford, we have documentation indicating unauthorized transfers totaling at least $2.7 million from client accounts to shell entities under your control. We are initiating formal enforcement proceedings. I strongly advise you to retain counsel before answering questions.”
Vivien grabbed Richard’s arm.
“Don’t say a word,” she hissed. “Not one word.”

His hands shook when he picked it up.
He opened near the middle and found one of the pages with his old drawing on it: a stick-figure woman in a chef’s hat beside a stick-figure boy. Underneath, in the giant earnest letters of childhood, he had written: Me and Mom cooking.
He pressed the binder to his chest and bowed his head.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry, Mom.”
I believed him.
That was the difficult part.
Because apologies are easy when catastrophe has already arrived. But there was real grief in his voice, and grief is what happens when a person sees himself clearly for the first time and doesn’t much like the view.
