We did not become warm overnight. We did not turn into one of those glossy, healed families from prestige dramas where one crisis magically converts years of condescension into tenderness. Life is not that generous and neither are I. But the axis shifted. People became more careful. More curious. More aware that I was not the cousin who could be softly positioned into the role of supporting cast.
That mattered.
Not because I needed their awe.
But because I no longer had to spend energy resisting a script I had never accepted.
The city outside my studio still wakes the same way each morning. Delivery trucks. Harbor light. The first commuters downtown. The old district holding onto itself just a little longer while newer money keeps pressing in. From the window, I can see the outline of the skyline and, beyond it, the top floors of the Sterling catching sun.
Forty-two stories.
Three hundred eighty-seven units.
One penthouse that taught my family the difference between wanting to be seen at the top and actually being in control of the building.
I sip coffee and open reports and watch the light move across the city.
