As for my mother—she would keep telling her version of the story until the day she couldn’t anymore. She would call me cruel. She would call me ungrateful. She would call me a daughter who betrayed her.

But the world had receipts now.

The courts had receipts.

And I had something she never understood, something no amount of manipulation could erase:

A life built by my own hands, rooted deep in American soil, strong enough to survive storms—natural or otherwise.
